Why Convert WebP to JPG? (The Real Reasons)

WebP is an excellent format for websites — smaller file sizes, good quality, fast loading. But the moment you take a WebP file off a website and try to use it anywhere else, problems start. The format was designed for web delivery, not compatibility.

JPG is the opposite. It was designed in 1992 to work everywhere — and 30+ years later it still does. Every email client, every printer, every photo editor, every device ever made can open a JPG. Converting WebP to JPG trades a few kilobytes for universal compatibility.

WebP broken in Outlook email

Outlook on Windows does not render WebP. Recipients see a broken image icon. Gmail is inconsistent — it sometimes converts WebP automatically but strips transparency. Convert to JPG before attaching to any email.

Downloaded a .webp from a website

Chrome and other browsers save images in WebP format when you right-click and save them from a website. The file looks fine in Chrome but won't open in Photos, Photoshop, or Windows Explorer. Convert it to JPG to use it anywhere.

Print service rejected the WebP file

Commercial print services — Vistaprint, Shutterfly, Walgreens Photo, local printers — do not accept WebP files. They require JPG, PNG, or PDF. Convert to JPG at quality 95–100 for print-quality output.

WebP won't open on older iPhone

iPhones running iOS 13 or earlier cannot open WebP files in Photos or Safari. Even on newer iPhones, WhatsApp and some apps reject WebP. JPG works on every iPhone ever made with no exceptions.

How to Convert WebP to JPG — 3 Steps

  1. 1

    Upload your WebP files

Drag and drop WebP images onto the converter above, or click to browse. Add one file or a full batch — no limit on how many you can process at once.

  2. 2

    Set JPG quality

The default is 90 — the right choice for most conversions. Lower to 80–85 for smaller email attachments. Raise to 95–100 if you need print-quality output. See the quality guide below for more detail.

  3. 3

    Download your JPGs

Conversion is instant — no waiting for server uploads. Download each file individually or click Download All to get a single ZIP archive containing every converted JPG.

Which JPG Quality Should You Use?

80 – 85

Email attachments

Keeps file sizes small enough to avoid email size limits. Looks sharp on screens. Good for newsletters and client deliveries.

85 – 90 ⭐

Social media / general use

Default sweet spot for most conversions. Visually identical to the original WebP at normal screen sizes. Recommended starting point.

90 – 95

Design work / editing

If you're going to open the JPG in Photoshop for further editing, use higher quality to minimise double-compression artefacts.

95 – 100

Print / archiving

Use for commercial printing, archiving originals, or any use where quality loss is unacceptable. Files will be larger.

Tip: If you're converting a WebP that was already compressed (downloaded from a website), using quality 90 adds no visible degradation compared to the original. The original WebP was already lossy — you're not "losing quality twice" at quality 90+.

Where WebP Works and Where It Doesn't (2026)

WebP works in all modern browsers — but fails in enough everyday situations to make JPG the safer default for anything leaving a website.

WebP Transparency and JPG — What You Need to Know

JPG cannot store transparency

If your WebP file has a transparent background (logos, cut-out product images, icons), those transparent areas will be filled with white when converting to JPG. Semi-transparent pixels (soft shadows, glows) are also flattened onto the white background.

How to handle it

  • For print: white background JPG is usually correct — print is always on white paper.
  • For dark backgrounds: use the background colour option in the tool to match your site colour.
  • Need transparency preserved: convert to WebP to PNG instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can't I open my WebP file in Photoshop?

Photoshop added native WebP support in version 23.2 (February 2022). If you are on Photoshop 23.1 or earlier, you need to install the free WebPShop plugin from Google (available on GitHub). For Photoshop CC 2018 and older, WebP is not supported at all — in those cases, converting WebP to JPG first is the fastest solution.

Why do WebP images show as broken in Outlook emails?

Microsoft Outlook on Windows does not render WebP images in emails — recipients see a broken image placeholder. This affects all desktop versions of Outlook on Windows as of 2026. Gmail handles it inconsistently and may convert WebP to JPEG automatically, losing any transparency. If you are sending images via email, convert WebP to JPG first to guarantee the image displays correctly for every recipient regardless of their email client.

Why can't I open a WebP image on my iPhone?

iPhones running iOS 13 or earlier do not support WebP in the Photos app or Safari. iOS 14 and later added WebP support, so if you have an updated iPhone, you should be able to open WebP files. If not, converting the WebP to JPG solves the problem on any iOS version — JPG has been supported on every iPhone since the original model in 2007.

I downloaded an image from a website and it saved as WebP — how do I convert it?

This is the most common reason people need a WebP to JPG converter. Websites (especially those using Chrome-based browsers) often save images in WebP format. To convert it: drop the .webp file onto the converter above, leave quality at 90, click Convert, and download your JPG. The entire process takes under 10 seconds and your files never leave your device.

Does converting WebP to JPG reduce quality?

It depends on the original WebP quality and the JPG quality you choose. At JPG quality 90, the visual difference is imperceptible for almost all images. Both WebP and JPG use lossy compression, so conversion involves a re-encode — but at quality 85+ you will not see any degradation at normal viewing sizes. For maximum quality (print use, archiving), use JPG quality 95–100.

What JPG quality should I use when converting WebP?

For email: quality 80–85 keeps file sizes small while looking sharp on screen. For social media sharing: quality 85–90. For printing or archiving: quality 95–100. The default setting of 90 is the right choice for most everyday conversions.

What happens to WebP transparency when converting to JPG?

JPG does not support transparency. Any transparent areas in your WebP file will be filled with a solid colour — white by default. If you need to keep transparency, do not convert to JPG; use our WebP to PNG converter instead, which fully preserves the alpha channel.

Can I batch convert multiple WebP files to JPG?

Yes. Drop or select as many WebP files as you need at once — there is no limit. All files are converted simultaneously in your browser at the same quality setting. Download each JPG individually, or click Download All to receive a single ZIP archive.

Will my WebP file upload to a printing service after I convert it to JPG?

Yes. JPG is universally accepted by all commercial print services — Vistaprint, Shutterfly, Snapfish, Walgreens Photo, local print shops, and every other service. For print, use quality 95–100 to avoid any compression artifacts at high DPI. Most print services also accept PNG if you need transparency in the printed image.
