Why Convert WebP to PNG? (The Editing & Design Reason)

WebP was built for one thing: delivering images fast on websites. It does that brilliantly. But the moment you need to edit, layer, re-use, or hand off an image — WebP falls apart. Design software either doesn't support it or supports it poorly. You can't layer a WebP in Illustrator. You can't open it in older Photoshop. You can't insert it into PowerPoint or Google Slides without it showing a broken placeholder on some systems.

PNG is the opposite — it is the universal creative format. Every design tool ever made accepts PNG natively. It is lossless, meaning you can save and re-save it hundreds of times without any quality degradation. It supports full alpha channel transparency. It is the correct format for any image you plan to edit, layer, or use as a source file.

WebP won't open in Photoshop or Illustrator

Illustrator has no native WebP support — you must convert first. Photoshop requires version 23.2+ or the WebPShop plugin for older versions. Converting to PNG gives you instant compatibility with every version of every Adobe product.

WebP in Figma, Framer, or Sketch

While Figma accepts WebP as an image fill, it cannot be imported as an editable layer and sometimes renders incorrectly at export. PNG is the safe, universal handoff format for all design tools — drop it in anywhere, every time.

WebP in PowerPoint or Google Slides

PowerPoint on Windows and macOS supports WebP since Office 2019, but Google Slides and older Office versions may show a broken image. PNG works in every version of every presentation tool without exception.

Need to edit and re-save multiple times

JPG degrades every time you save it. WebP is the same when using lossy mode. PNG is lossless — save it 100 times and the 100th save is pixel-perfect identical to the first. Use PNG as your working master format.

How to Convert WebP to PNG — 3 Steps

  1. 1

    Upload your WebP files

Drag and drop WebP images onto the converter above, or click to browse. Add one file or a full batch — no limit on the number of files you can process at once.

  2. 2

    Convert (no settings needed)

PNG conversion is lossless — there is no quality slider because there is no quality loss to control. Every pixel is preserved exactly. Transparency is kept automatically. Just click Convert.

  3. 3

    Download your PNG files

Conversion is instant — no waiting for server uploads. Download each PNG file individually or click Download All to get a single ZIP archive containing all converted files.

Lossy vs Lossless WebP Source — What It Means for Your PNG

WebP files can be lossy or lossless — and this affects your PNG output in ways that matter if you're using it for professional work.

Lossy WebP source (most web images)

The vast majority of WebP files on the internet — product photos, blog images, downloaded from websites — were saved using lossy compression. These files already have compression artefacts baked in.

Converting to PNG preserves the image at its current quality, including those artefacts. The PNG will be lossless from this point forward — but it cannot recover detail that was already discarded by the original lossy encoding.

Lossless WebP source (design exports)

WebP files exported from design tools (Figma, Photoshop, Sketch) or generated programmatically are often lossless. These files contain perfect pixel data — no artefacts.

Converting a lossless WebP to PNG gives you pixel-perfect output — the PNG is visually identical to the original source, every pixel preserved exactly. This is the ideal path for design assets.

Practical tip: If you don't know whether your WebP is lossy or lossless, the answer is almost certainly lossy if you downloaded it from a website. It's likely lossless if it was exported from a design tool. Either way, converting to PNG is the correct move for editing — PNG will not make it worse.

What Happens to Animated WebP Files?

Static PNG (default)

By default, animated WebP files are converted to a static PNG using the first frame. This is the correct choice if you only need a still image — for a thumbnail, a preview, or editing a single frame.

APNG (preserves animation)

APNG (Animated PNG) preserves all animation frames and is supported by Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. If you need to keep the animation, convert to APNG rather than static PNG. APNG files are larger than animated WebP but have broader editing tool support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does WebP to PNG preserve transparency?

Yes — completely. PNG is the gold standard for alpha channel transparency, supporting full 8-bit alpha (256 levels of opacity) including semi-transparent pixels, soft shadows, and smooth anti-aliased edges. When you convert a WebP file with transparency to PNG, every transparent and semi-transparent pixel is preserved exactly. No pixels are flattened, no white background is added.

Does converting WebP to PNG lose quality?

No — PNG is a lossless format, so converting to PNG never introduces additional compression artefacts. However, if the original WebP file used lossy compression (most WebP images on the web do), those artefacts are already baked into the file. Converting to PNG captures the image at its current quality — it cannot restore detail that was lost when the WebP was originally compressed. Lossless WebP files convert to PNG at perfect quality with zero degradation.

Why can't I open a WebP file in Photoshop or Illustrator?

Photoshop added native WebP support in version 23.2 (February 2022). Versions earlier than 23.2 require the free WebPShop plugin from Google. Adobe Illustrator does not natively support WebP — you need to convert to PNG first. GIMP supports WebP from version 2.10.2 onwards. For any design software that does not support WebP, converting to PNG is the fastest solution — PNG has had universal support across all creative software for over 20 years.

Why convert WebP to PNG instead of JPG for editing?

PNG is better than JPG for editing work because it is lossless — saving and re-saving a PNG file never degrades quality. JPG is lossy: every time you save a JPG, the compression algorithm runs again, slightly degrading the image. If you plan to edit the image multiple times, PNG is the correct master format. PNG also preserves transparency, which JPG cannot. The only reason to choose JPG over PNG is file size — JPG files are smaller, making them better for final web delivery.

Can I use PNG files from WebP in Figma, Framer, or Sketch?

Yes. PNG is the universal import format for all design tools. Figma, Framer, Sketch, Adobe XD, InVision, Canva, and every other design tool accepts PNG natively. While some tools have added WebP support, PNG remains the safest choice for cross-tool handoffs — you can drop a PNG into any design tool ever made and it will work without plugins or configuration.

What happens when I convert an animated WebP to PNG?

An animated WebP contains multiple frames. When converting to PNG, you can either extract the first frame as a static PNG (the default in most converters), or convert to APNG (Animated PNG) to preserve all animation frames. APNG is supported by Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. If you need to preserve the animation, look for the APNG output option. If you only need a single still frame, standard PNG conversion is correct.

Why is my PNG file larger than the original WebP?

This is expected and normal. WebP uses more aggressive compression than PNG — especially if the WebP was lossy. PNG is a lossless format that stores every pixel, which is why files are larger. A lossless WebP that converts to PNG will typically produce a PNG about 20–30% larger. A lossy WebP converting to PNG can produce a PNG 2–5× larger. This is the cost of maximum quality and universal compatibility. If file size matters for web delivery, keep the WebP for website use and use the PNG only for editing and archiving.

Can I batch convert WebP to PNG and download as ZIP?

Yes. Drop or select as many WebP files as you need — there is no limit. All files are converted simultaneously in your browser. Download each PNG individually or click Download All to receive a single ZIP archive containing every converted PNG.

Does converting WebP to PNG work for WebP files downloaded from websites?

Yes — this is the most common use case. Chrome and other browsers save images in WebP format when you right-click and save from a website. Drop the .webp file into the converter, click Convert, and download your PNG. The process takes under 10 seconds and your files never leave your device.
